Who are the Mennonites?

Mennonites believe peace building is an achievable way of life. Because God is loving and just, Mennonites feel called to live lives that reflect this reality. We believe that peace and wholeness are real possibilities in time and space. It is how God intends us to live here and now, and we have been given all of the necessary tools to achieve this through our faith in Jesus Christ.

Our Covenant Statement

At an annual covenanting service, members and affiliates of Shalom Mennonite Fellowship recommit themselves to God, to the faith community and to the world with these words:

Recognizing that the church is the visible body of Jesus Christ, who as its founder has called all who believe in him to become a part of his body, I, with the help of God, renew my covenant with God and my sisters and brothers in the faith.

As one who has received the new birth through Jesus Christ, I dedicate myself to God, to do God's will as revealed through the study of the Bible, prayer, guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the counsel of fellow believers.

I accept my responsibility to care for the physical and spiritual needs of others, to give and to receive counsel in a spirit of openness and love.

I will participate actively in the services of the church, giving my time, talents and material resources as they are needed for the furtherance of the Gospel of Christ and his church.

I will endeavor to bring all of life under the lordship of Jesus Christ by allowing the fruit of the Spirit to be evident in my life, in giving of myself in the service of humankind. I will seek to leave a witness of peace and nonviolence in obedience to the teachings of Christ.

I hereby commit myself to the Shalom Mennonite Fellowship and the larger Mennonite Church, for the work of building the Kingdom of God in this community and in the world.

What is a "Peace Church"?

Peace churches are Christian groups in the pacifist tradition, that teach Jesus was himself a pacifist and taught and practiced pacifism, and that his followers must do likewise. Mennonites believe that a basic part of the good news of Jesus is peace. The Mennonite Church is a historic peace church that grew out of the Protestant Reformation in Europe in the early 1500s.
