About Us

Our Covenant Statement

At an annual covenanting service, members and affiliates of Shalom Mennonite Fellowship recommit themselves to God, to the faith community and to the world with these words:

Recognizing that the church is the visible body of Jesus Christ, who as its founder has called all who believe in him to become a part of his body, I, with the help of God, renew my covenant with God and my sisters and brothers in the faith.

As one who has received the new birth through Jesus Christ, I dedicate myself to God, to do God's will as revealed through the study of the Bible, prayer, guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the counsel of fellow believers.

I accept my responsibility to care for the physical and spiritual needs of others, to give and to receive counsel in a spirit of openness and love.

I will participate actively in the services of the church, giving my time, talents and material resources as they are needed for the furtherance of the Gospel of Christ and his church.

I will endeavor to bring all of life under the lordship of Jesus Christ by allowing the fruit of the Spirit to be evident in my life, in giving of myself in the service of humankind. I will seek to leave a witness of peace and nonviolence in obedience to the teachings of Christ.

I hereby commit myself to the Shalom Mennonite Fellowship and the larger Mennonite Church, for the work of building the Kingdom of God in this community and in the world.

Statement on Inclusion

Shalom Mennonite Fellowship welcomes all children of God to worship, participate, serve, contribute their gifts, and join in church membership.  Members are expected to subscribe to the covenant statement of the church.  Shalom does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or socio-economic status.

Community

Mennonite congregational presence in Tucson dates back to 1967. Shalom Mennonite Fellowship, formed in 1978, grew out of those early beginnings. We have grown in that time, but continue to nurture a strong sense of community. We are energetic, mutually supportive, and open to diversity. Shalom is a member of the Pacific Southwest Mennonite Conference (PSMC), and affiliated with the Mennonite Church USA, a denomination with sister congregations worldwide.

Worship

Worship forms the energizing core of Shalom's faith and community life. The word of God is proclaimed through singing, preaching, sharing and prayer. Congregational participation for worship leaders, speakers, Bible readers, song leaders, musicians and visual artists is encouraged. Children are welcomed to participate fully in the worship life of the congregation.

Service

A Mennonite Voluntary Service unit invites persons to Tucson to work with community-based service agencies. Participants in the Service Opportunities for Older People (SOOP) program are hosted in the winter months. Community Home Repair Projects of Arizona (CHRPA), an agency begun as a mission service project, provides emergency home repair to low income households. The Zuni Avenue Peace Center is a peace-building outreach to the neighborhood and beyond, with projects like a community garden, a bike club,  carpentry program for girls called Girls With Tools, a pottery class for all ages, and a food box distribution program for low income people.
